One of the greatest things you can do for your children is to make sure that you view your needs as needs that are as important as your child’s. This may seem counter-intuitive, but children grow and develop best when they are raised by content, well adjusted parents. By taking care of your own needs equally with those of you children’s, you can give and give to your children without getting resentful.
Do not be in a hurry to introduce solid foods to your baby. It is now recommended that this is not done before the age of six months. Studies show children develop food allergies if solid food is introduced too soon. If your baby is unable to hold up their head at six months, wait to feed them solid food, until they can hold it up on their own.
A child needs love, this is the greatest gift that you can give them. Ignore any criticism that the child is being spoiled by your attentions, they need constant reassurance that their parents love them and are there for them no matter what. Even when a child makes a mistake it is okay to say “I am angry with you, but I still love you.”
When your child is misbehaving, try getting down on your knees to talk to them. This allows you to look at your child directly in the eyes, which makes the interaction more serious and uncomfortable for them. Talking to your child at the eye level can be much more effective than shouting from a standing position.
When you’re trying to get an older toddler or child excited about their car seat, let them help you choose it. You can let your child pick the color, or the pattern, or sometimes even the style of seat. Doing this will help ensure that they want to sit in their “special seat” and can mean less traveling battles.
Getting involved at your child’s school is a great way to improve your child’s performance in school. Volunteering at school can send your child a positive message about how much you care about their education. It will also give you a first hand look into your child’s environment away from home.
For a great visual reminder of things that your child shouldn’t touch, come up with a sign or signal that you can place in areas where little hands aren’t allowed. A printed photo of a stop sign may be just the thing to remind your child that he or she isn’t supposed to touch or play in a cupboard or drawer.
Never underestimate the power of touch when it comes to comforting your child. Hugs, kisses, pats on the back, or touching their hands all let them know that you love them and care. Make sure that your child gets some physical contact from you every day, because it helps them thrive.
For mothers who have daughters, get some quality time in with mother-daughter tea time. Set aside some time for just the two of you. Make some tea and share a yummy treat. Watch a movie. Read a book together. You’ll be creating memories that will last a lifetime, and forming a bond that you will cherish forever.
Tantrums are a method of communication, so punishing a non-verbal child for throwing a tantrum is useless and often harmful. If your child is too young to speak or has a speech-related disability, have patience with tantrums while you work on teaching your child better, more effective communication skills.

One of the best ways to do this, is to start contributing to a 529 Plan. These are state operated savings plans designed to help save for college. They also provide tax benefits.
